About our School

Summit Hill Elementary opened in the fall of 1999 with an enrollment of about 750 students. Since then, we have maintained a healthy enrollment of about 720 students. There is tremendous dedication and commitment of staff members, parents, and community to support our goal to work passionately and collaboratively to inspire every student's success in life and learning.

School History

This story ran in our newsletter the first year we opened.  We hope our new families will enjoy reading about our history.

On December 5, 1895, John W. Cowart deeded to the School Trustees of Summit School approximately one acre of land for the price of ten dollars "…as long as same is used for school purposes."  Mr. Cowart later served as trustee and principal.  The two-room school was built shortly after that date and stayed in existence until 1932 when Milton County was merged into Fulton County.  Summit School stood approximately 100 yards from where Summit Hill Elementary now stands.  Mr. Cowart's farmhouse still stands at the corner of Providence and Cowart Roads.  Summit or Summit Hill as it was sometimes called, is the name of the ridge that rums through the small community whose rough boundaries include Cooper Sandy Creek on the south, Chicken Creek on the north, Hopewell Road on the east and Providence Church on the west.  On clear days, the mountains of North Georgia are visible from the crest of Summit.  From reviewing the old school records it is clear that, like now, this community was very interested in the education of its children.  Judging form the names of individuals who served as trustees, principals and teachers, virtually the entire community, at one time or another participated in the successful operation of Summit School.
